Somewhere in the back of my mind There’s a voice that won’t go away It’s there all the time And it always seems to say Beware (beware), Take care (take care) Batten down the hatches, don’t go out anywhere And if something happens don’t go blaming me It’s all down to your complacency

about

Welcome to “Under The Artex Sky”, our nineteenth album. This album was recorded and assembled under lockdown conditions and this has had a big influence on the sound, the way it was recorded, the words and even the sequencing of the tracks. The recording process involved sitting in separate houses, and you can’t get more socially distanced than that. Does that mean it’s our “lockdown” album? Perhaps.

Firstly, we revisited some old unfinished recordings and the backing tracks for “Complacency”, “Let The Days Flow”, “Rain” and “Mr. Nicky in Japan” stretch back a long time. “Hello You” is newer, a track recorded for our last album “Fear for the Future” that didn’t quite fit.

During lockdown we also recorded a number of webcam and audio feeds of the natural world from right across the intranet. We were explorers of the great indoors. The nature sounds you can hear on tracks 1 and 9 come from an African watering hole, an Australian rainforest and even under the sea, just off the Californian coast. However, the field recordings on the final track were actually recorded in person on a Japanese railway platform.

We also recorded shortwave radio recordings from a website which relays a shortwave receiver. However, the mysterious numbers read out on “Insomnia” are from a recording Steve made off a shortwave radio in the eighties. If you are curious, Google “Spy Number Stations.”

The House of Three Cheers also made a wonderful video album to accompany this. We now consider this a soundtrack.

We hope you enjoy the album. Remember not to spend too much time under the Artex sky.
